Mike Adkins

Photography to me is like being re-united with an old friend. May years ago I made my living and supported my family with a camera and a studio. But that was a long time ago. Over the past couple of years I re-discovered my love for photography. I feel that it was inevitable that I would once again pick up a camera and re-discover how much I enjoyed the craft. Digital photography matured to the point that it equaled and in some ways surpassed film. This media was perfect because I could now have my darkroom right in my computer and my photo lab in the form of a printer beside my desk. Digital means a lot of freedom that I never had in the days of film.

This web page is dedicated to the photos that I have taken, the links and stories about photographers that I am inspired by and who keep pushing me to improve and information that I feel is worthy of sharing with my clients, friends and family.

Staged Photography

This should not be confused with photography that is taken from theater sets. My definition of Staged Photography is a photo that is planned and set up to create a vision or tell a story that would not be possible to capture in real life. To create a staged photo is extensive. I tell people it is like creating a movie but you are only going to shoot one frame. You have to think of everything except the script. There is props, wardrobe, background, lighting, actors, and support people to help pull of a successful shoot. This may be why it is hard to locate on the internet photographers that work to produce these type of prints.

The photo below is my first staged photo project. It also proved to be one of the most successful. I call this print the rescue. The idea of the print was a tribute to 911 and firefighters everywhere. I wanted to show a little girl standing between two large firefighters in full gear. I wanted the little girl in a night shirt and it look like the fireman had just rescued her and the little girl was waiting to be re-united with her parents.

My Photo Web Site.
